SLSA 18: Local Institutions and Participatory Development

This SLSA looks at the idea of local institutions and how they can play an integral role in supporting sustainable livelihoods. A number of SLSA’s focus on issues around local institutions, eg SLSA No 18 on Participatory Forest Management; and No 13 on Institutional Support for Sustainable Livelihoods. This edition aims to provide a conceptual framework which can assist us to understand these institutions. The author is Dr Frances Cleaver, a Senior Lecturer at the Bradford Centre for International Development in the UK, who has undertaken considerable work on local institutions and water.
