A participatory experience with Prof Robert Chambers, University of Sussex - to be held on 25 January 2010, 19h00, Wits University, Johannesburg

Map and Directions

Khanya-aicdd has had a long and fruitful relationship with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) (University of Sussex). Our CEO, Kamal Singh worked for 5 years at the IDS, and was a founder member with Prof Chambers of the initial Participation Group. Together they supported the spread of participatory methods across the globe through south-south networking, learning and sharing events and publications.
The seminar by Prof Robert Chambers will be an opportunity to revisit the genesis and value of participatory approaches, reflect on their use internationally and in the local context. It is not intended to be a formal lecture, as much as a facilitated participatory experience. Prof Chambers will thus be focusing on what he calls “revolutions in development inquiry”.

“Participatory methodologies (PMs) for inquiry, revealing realities and generating insights will always be a frontier for innovation. But the challenge is far more than this. It is for PMs to go beyond inquiry, to be an entry point and means to transform power and relationships, and so our world.”

This seminar will therefore add great value to the work of all who are of the view that participatory governance demands new and innovative ways of working. While Khanya is hosting, the event is being supported by:

  • Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (Wits) and
  • The School of Social Sciences (Wits)
  • The Centre for Development Support – University of Free State
  • Ford Foundation
