Kenya pilots the CBW System
In Kenya, five partners were involved in the piloting phase.
Those piloting a Natural Resources (NR) model included:
- Community-based Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) in Samburu District, Northern Kenya, supported by Practical Action, and
- Pastoralist communities in North-Eastern Kenya who were supported by WASDA, working on water management issues and CAHWs.
Practical Action addressed how CAHWs could be formalised and organised into groups to strengthen their ability to access capacity building resources that would enable them to advocate and influence policy. This would refine the role of Community-Based Animal Health Workers (CBAHWs) by linking them with the Ministry of Livestock in a Drought Emergency Livestock Programme.
Within the HIV/AIDS sector pilots are being implemented by KANCO, KICOSHEP and ELCI-ABC Kisumu.
- KANCO looked at the legislation framework in using volunteers over varying time periods. It explored the potential for career development of volunteers and how to develop their skills for better job opportunities once they leave KANCO.
- KICOSHEP had two types of volunteers. Those trained by the organisation ('caregivers') to train families to care, support and assist the bedridden clients with bathing and all other care needs of a patient. The second type is the volunteers from the community (possibly people living with or having AIDS - PLWHA) who are identified and supported by the caregivers. They provide education, sharing of positive living and mobilisation. Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) are also involved in the programme and they give education on HIV/AIDS and health related matters, make referrals to other agencies and health centres and provide care and support to PLWHAs.
- ELCI-ABC Kisumu implemented two models; the first one was the 8-15 hours unpaid with 9 Community-based Facilitators (CBFs) who provide links to advocacy services to poor fisherfolk in the Lake District. The second one is the 30-40 hours paid a salary model where one coordinator is employed to manage the 9 facilitators. The team mobilises communities at designated beaches to participate in roundtable discussions on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SR&HRs).
