ID SPEECH ON 2010 SOCCER WORLD CUP – JOINT SITTING
3 JUNE 2010-I would like to congratulate the Government for all the hard work that has gone into making the 2010 Soccer World Cup the best ever!
JOHN GUNDA, MP IN THE NCOP
Honourable Speaker and all protocol observed,
I would like to congratulate the Government for all the hard work that has gone into making the 2010 Soccer World Cup the best ever!
I am sure that the infrastructure we have built will stand us in very good stead during our economic recovery.
To those people that said we would never succeed – you were wrong!
I would like to echo the words of Fifa’s leadership when they said that the man that brought the World Cup to Africa and particularly South Africa was Nelson Mandela.
Honourable Speaker let me quote the following people,
Standford Hegenbotham, who said,
“Football is the opera of the people,”
The great Pele, who said,
“It is encouraging to hear that men of great ability themselves think that we have talent in our ranks,”
Former President Thabo Mbeki, who said,
“The Soccer World Cup in Africa reaffirms our common humanity and proves we all belong to one family,”
And, lastly, former President Nelson Mandela himself, who said,
“The World Cup will help unify people. If there is one thing on this planet that has the power to bind people together it is soccer.”
Honourable Speaker let me say this – a child in sport is a child out of court.
I would like to challenge the Department of Sport and Recreation concerning the development of different sporting codes in our rural areas, where there is raw talent that only needs to be developed.
Honourable Speaker, I would like to thank all South Africans from all of our different backgrounds for rallying behind our team by flying flags and wearing Bafana Bafana jerseys.
We wish Bafana Bafana well and we will support them every step of the way.
I thank you.
Viva Bafana Bafana Viva!!!!
