is to be revived
Brett Herron, ID Councillor and Spokesperson for the ID Caucus in the City of Cape Town, says the ID ‘welcomes reports that the street renaming process that was abandoned in 2008 is set to be revived.
In 2007 the City of Cape Town appointed a “panel of experts” to make recommendations to the City on street renaming.
That panel of experts received about 230 public submissions and recommended 31 name changes. However, in 2008 the City withdrew the report. Meanwhile, this morning’s Cape Times reports that the Premier of the Western Cape would like to see the process concluded, suggesting that street renaming will be back on the agenda.
‘We welcome the re-opening of this process. In 2008 the matter was withdrawn from a council agenda for the purposes of further discussion. Instead, the process was simply buried and abandoned and there was no further discussion that we were a part of.
‘The panel of experts, chaired by Rhoda Kadalie, produced a modest, well-considered and well-motivated list of 31 proposed name changes and we are convinced that the implementation of these changes would go a long way towards healing divides in this City.
‘The process was an open and democratic one and the results were a reflection of thoughtful public submissions and considered expert input.
We believe it is about time that the City celebrates modern day South African heroes, such as Nelson Mandela, in a bold and symbolic way and renaming Hertzog Ave to Nelson Mandela Boulevard, as was proposed, amongst other proposals, would be an appropriate way to start,’ said Herron.
