Newsletter 94-Urban economic indicators (Part 2) -22 October 2010

In 2009, 30% of people were living in poverty. Current annual personal income per capita stood at R46 000 in 2008. Between 2004 and 2007 the number of people formally employed increased by 69%.These figures are the average of the eight major urban areas reviewed here.

In last week’s newsletter two of the five economic indicators were reviewed and this week we look at the other three: proportion of people living in poverty, current personal annual income per capita, and formal employment growth. The latest available figures are given below: for the proportion of people living in poverty they are from 2009, for current annual income per capita from 2008, and for the growth in the number of people formally employed the period 2004-2007.

 
In 2009, 20% of people in Cape Town were living in poverty. Personal income per capita stood at R56 000 in 2008. Over the period of 2004-07 the growth in the number of people formally employed was 50%.
 
In Ekurhuleni (East Rand) the poverty rate was 28% in 2009, while in 2008 current income per capita was R46 000.  The growth in the number of people formally employed was 25%.
 
In 2009 eThekwini (Durban) had a poverty rate of 31% and in 2008 personal income per capita was R42 000. The number of people formally employed grew by 67% over the period of 2004-07.
 
Johannesburg had a poverty rate of 22% in 2009, while personal income per capita stood at R58 000 in 2008. In the 2004-07 period, the number of people formally employed shrunk by 5%.
 
In 2009, 34% of people in Bloemfontein were living in poverty. Personal income per capita was R36 000 in 2008. The growth in the number of people formally employed over the period 2004-2007 was 300%.
 
Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) had a poverty rate of 33% in 2009. Personal income per capita was R40 000 in 2008. There was a 100% growth in the number of people formally employed over the 2004-2007 period.
 
In 2009, Polokwane’s poverty rate was 47% while personal income per capita in 2008 was R25 000. The growth in the number of people formally employed was 300% in 2004-2007.
 
In 2009, 18% of people in Tshwane (Pretoria) were living in poverty, while personal income per capita was R63 000 in 2008. In Tshwane, the growth in the number of people formally employed over the 2004-07 period was 67%.
 
Cape Town had the lowest proportion of people living in poverty at 20%, while Polokwane had the highest at 47%. Tshwane had the highest personal income per capita at R63 000, while Polokwane had the lowest at R25 000. Growth in the number of people formally employed over the 2004-07 period was highest in Bloemfontein and Polokwane while Johannesburg had a negative growth over the period.
