Newsletter 100- Happy 100th newsletter -3 December 2010

This is the 100th newsletter from the Municipal Outreach Project. This column started on 19th December 2008 as one of the project’s deliverables. A wide range of topics have been covered here and some very positive response has been received from readers.

There are some 1 800 project beneficiaries who include councillors, local government officials, and development organisations across the six metropolitan municipalities and also two district municipalities. Beneficiaries receive this newsletter on a weekly basis in addition to a monthly publication, Fast Facts for Local Government, and the annual Supplement to the South Africa Survey.

The main objective of our municipal outreach project is to strengthen the institutional and participatory development capacity of its project beneficiaries in combating poverty. The Institute does not define poverty merely in financial terms but rather looks at its broader manifestations. As a result, the research it collates on poverty includes broader issues such as health, education, access to services, and employment among others.

The same comprehensive approach was followed in the selection of topics for the newsletters, with a wide range of topics having been covered. These ranged from education levels and best practices for poverty alleviation through municipal finance and politics to agriculture, service delivery, and health care among others.

Given the constantly positive response we have received from the readers of this column, we are confident that it has provided them with current and interesting information.

We intend to keep the column informative and relevant. Moreover, we would like to thank you for making this column part of your weekly reading.

Should you have specific topics that you would like us to write about, please send your requests and suggestions to nmajoe@sairr.org.za

Here is to a hundred more!
